Δεν ζέρω αν εδώ είναι η σωστή θέση, αλλά ήθελα να προτείνω ένα μέρος στο forum για τα eee pc.

(Feel free to move this if it's in the wrong place!)

(Sorry about the poor Ελληνικά!)

Hi David,

(Maybe we can use a bit of English here.) It would be great if you could bring your eee to the next meeting, as I'd like to see your set up. I've got the 701 4G surf but I bought it in May so it's pretty old. It's running the stock Xandros with the addition of Greek, FF3 and the icewm start menu. I'm a total noob in Linux matters but I quite like the Xandros, except that it's useless for updating or changing anything.

Yes English is a good idea.

Unfortunately I couldn't make the last meeting as I had a prior engagement but I'll try to be free for the next one.

I can understand your frustrations with Xandros it's not the most up to date distro and has a limited software repository. It is possible to use Debian repositories but sometimes it can break your installation as it's not 100% compatible. The advantage is very fast boot-up times as it's using a very light window manager IceWM.

I'll bring mine to the next meeting and you can see if you like it or not, I'll also bring a bootable usb drive with UbuntuEEE on it. If you like what you see you can install it if you have enough battery time (should only need about half an hour I think). It's based on Ubuntu 8.04 so its supported for 3 years.

Anyway see if you like it and we'll take it from there....

Maybe someone else has got some good ideas for distros for the EEE PC I have tried stock ubuntu 7.10 with patches, eeeXubuntu, Madriva (fully functional out of the box) UbuntuEEE and PupEEE the last two are the ones I liked the most.

Power is not an issue since the cafe we meet has sockets which (last time I checked) are functional.

Anyway, the battery I have lasts at least two and a half hours. But I'd really like to check out this stuff. To install Ubuntu eee do you have to get rid of the partition for the F9 restore?
I had a look at the PupEEE site, too, and I've read good things about it on the eeeuser. forum. I'd like someone to explain how I can run other distros from a USB stick or a SDHC card on my eee so I can see which ones I like.  Right now Xandros does what I want and fast but it does have its limitations.

To install UbuntEEE to the solid state disc (SSD) you would completely wipe the drive thereby destroying the F9 restore.

I'm not an expert but I'll try to give you explanation of things.....

You can boot from either usb flash sticks or SDHC as 'live distros' or installed distros. Live distros are compressed so tend to be a lot slower e.g Ubuntu live is compressed to about 700 MB when installed version takes up about 3GB. PupEEE is a live distro but a very lightweight one about 130MB so when its booted it's loaded straight into RAM which makes it very fast.

When you turn on your computer you can press the ESC key, this gives you an option of which device you want to boot from either SSD, SDHC or USB stick. If you have 3 or 4 SDHC cards it's a great way of trying different distros as you can swap in different cards press ESC while booting and choose to boot from SDHC.

The only thing you have to be careful of is where you put GRUB (bootload manager) every time you install a distro to SDHC . You want to install it on the SDHC card you're using for the new distro.

I've probably made this all as clear as mud.......the best thing to do is see it in action for yourself.

You can keep Xandros on the SSD if you like with F9 restore and just experiment with different distros on a couple of SDHC cards, that way you get the best of both worlds.

Yes, that sounds exactly what I want at the moment - I mean, to have a couple of other distros on SDHC cards and keep Xandros for the moment. I'm keen on trying Ubuntu eee and PupEEE to see what they're like.
By the way I understood your explanation ;D except that I'm not advanced enough to be able to install a distro to a SDHC card by myself and I wouldn't have a clue about being careful where I put GRUB so I need some help with this.
I have a 4GB SDHC card and and 8GB USB stick - can I do the above with these - or should I go shopping?
Thanks for all your help and advice.

I don't think you need to go shopping, sounds good to me...We can put PupEEE on the 8GB usb flash stick as it's copied to RAM as it boots and install UbuntuEEE on the SDHC card.

Hopefully we can both make the next LUG meeting so we can do it then.

P.S Just make sure you have whats on the USB and SDHC backed up somewhere else.

I'll transfer the contents onto something else and leave them free. Then, no problem. so, hope to see you at the next meeting.

By the way, do you have any idea how to get rid of that annoying dialogue in the shutdown menu of Xandros that says ' are you sure'? It reminds me of Vista!!! I searched the forum and the wiki but found only instructions for getting rid of all the "shut down, restart, standby, task manager" choice and shutting down by pressing the power button.

Sorry, can't really remember much about the Xandros distro, maybe I can help when I see it in front of me or maybe one of the other guys/girls can.

OK, will do some more heavy reading on the wiki and see if I can figure it out for myself in the meantime.
